BURR RIDGE, Illinois - Sept. 13, 2007 - Case IH played an important role at the recent conference in Durban, South Africa convened by the Institute of Sugar Cane Technologists. Case IH sponsored the main lectures on mechanization delivered at the conference, which attracted sugar cane developers and producers worldwide.
Industry-leading experts reported on different techniques practiced in sugar-growing regions, guiding delegates on how to improve productivity and efficiency through mechanization. The Case IH Cane Harvester was cited as a machine regarded as central to any productivity improvement.
The conference served as a forum for the industry to review economic and social trends affecting the crop and to discuss changes and progress in plant development, manpower issues, field management and mechanization advances.
Case IH received many inquiries at its exhibition stand from established customers and new prospects. The leads will be pursued to provide the basis of a strong order book for the company's Brazilian manufacturing plant and to strengthen the Case IH brand reputation as a global leader in specialized harvesting equipment.
The consensus among conference attendees was that the sugar cane industry is moving into a period of sustained growth based on these factors:
- A strong period for cane sugar prices is forecast.
- Sugar cane is a highly efficient plant and is targeted for bio-fuel development in numerous global markets.
- The waste material generated from cane harvesting is seen to have great potential as a biomass energy source.
- Both Asia and India are actively looking to move toward mechanized harvesting systems to replace the heavy dependence on manual cutting, as many field workers are leaving the agricultural regions for urbanized areas.
- The productivity of sugar cane harvesters and balers are crucial for the industry to take advantage of the potential growth.
